RE: Youth Peace Parliament 2007
Dear Principal,
On behalf of the International Day of Peace Alliance, I have the pleasure of inviting students from your school in grades 9 to 12 to participate in a special event commemorating the United Nations’ decreed International Day of Peace in September.
In acknowledgement of the International Day of Peace, A Youth Peace Parliament is being held at Queensland Parliament House on Monday 24th to Wednesday 26th of September, 2007.
The Youth Peace Parliament is held annually to raise awareness of the International Day of Peace, and to educate students about peace, and their role in democracy. Young people from all over Queensland are being invited to join in this event.
There will be 89 students participating in the Youth Peace Parliament this year. It is held in the first week of school holidays, with a pre-meeting held on August 18. During the Youth Peace Parliament, students will partake in debate on motions, question time, and make speeches relevant to their local community. As happened last year, it is expected that the Youth Peace Parliament will be attended by members of both the Federal and State Parliaments.
This will be an excellent opportunity for young people from your school who are concerned about peace to put their ideas forward and have their voices heard. Please find attached an application form, which can be copied as many times as is needed. Applications close June 15th, 2007. (addendum...due to popular demand, a second round of applications are now runnning but close on JULY 27!)
There is no cost involved in participating in the event and lunches will be provided. However, participants in the Youth Peace Parliament are responsible for the cost of their transport and accommodation. We are able to help organise transport and billeting for students who live outside an hour’s distance from Brisbane, if they require it. There will also be sponsorship information supplied to students, to assist them with finding sponsorship for transport.
There is no limit to the number of applications that can be received from any one school.
If you require any more information, please do not hesitate to contact me by any of the methods listed above.
Yours Faithfully,
James Vercoe
Youth Peace Parliament Co-Ordinator.
