The Day the World Changed...

   September 11, 2001

How it should have been

On September 11, 2001, the United Nations Secretary General was to announce that the 21 st of September had been decreed by the UN as the International Day of Peace, to be commemorated by all peoples from that year forward.

How it was

Instead an attack on the United States swamped the ‘good news’ story and arguably set the scene for a period of devastating catastrophe which has changed our world.

How it is

The level of bloodshed and violence in this, the 21st century world is abhorrent. Think for a moment, of the families who are part of the disaster of Iraq, the difficulties in Afghanistan or the dictators who torture, kill or make political prisoners of dissidents. Ask yourself if you want the situation to continue...

 How it can be

We live in a period of unprecedented access to information and communication. We have a never-before-seen opportunity to express ourselves to others around the world.

And we have a never-before-seen opportunity to make a difference; we have a single day to leverage off, in the name of Peace.

September 21, The International Day of Peace.

The Day the United Nations has “…invited all Member States , organisations of the UN, regional and NGOs and individuals to commemorate, in an appropriate manner, the International Day of Peace, including through education and public awareness…” ( Click here to read the full UN resolution. )
